Turkey’s Baykar Unveils First Unmanned Fighter Jet, KIZILELMA

Baykar is Turkey’s leading drone manufacturer. It is widely recognized for its Bayraktar drones. Now, Baykar is advancing into the realm of unmanned fighter jets with the KIZILELMA. The Bayraktar TB2 drones have played a key role in conflicts involving Ukraine and Azerbaijan. They are also in service with Bangladesh and Pakistan along their borders with India. 

Baykar’s first-ever indigenous unmanned fighter jet, KIZILELMA, has now successfully completed its Aerodynamics System Identification Test. This test is part of its scheduled evaluations. 

Successful Test Flight & Key Enhancements

The KIZILELMA production prototype (PT3) took off from the AKINCI Flight Training and Test Centre in Çorlu. It successfully executed a series of aerodynamic system identification procedures. 

Building on insights from previous prototypes, Baykar introduced structural upgrades and avionics enhancements in the latest version. The aircraft also flew with an alternative engine. It integrated with an afterburner and allowed the aircraft to approach supersonic speeds. This configuration enabled high-speed manoeuvres with improved aerodynamics. 

Equipped with an AESA radar, the KIZILELMA is designed to maintain high situational awareness and execute complex missions with precision. 

Future of Unmanned Combat Operations

KIZILELMA has already shown its ability to fly in formation alongside the Bayraktar AKINCI UCAV. On May 1, 2023, it flew in formation over Istanbul. It was accompanied by the F-16 fighter jet SOLOTURK. The Turkish Stars F-5 demonstration team also joined the formation. These developments highlight the jet’s potential in shaping the future of aerial combat. 

The unmanned fighter jet is integrated with artificial intelligence, allowing for autonomous take-off, landing, mission execution, and even dogfighting. KIZILELMA boasts a stealth design with a low radar cross-section. It features a versatile weapons system. These attributes position it as a strong contender for future carrier-based operations. 

Baykar’s Growing Global Presence

Baykar has relied entirely on its own resources for UAV research and development since 2003. It generates 83% of its revenue from exports. In 2023 and 2024, the company achieved $1.8 billion in exports annually, securing its position as the largest UAV exporter globally. 

Baykar has signed export agreements with 34 countries for the Bayraktar TB2 UCAV. Additionally, they have agreements with 11 countries for the Bayraktar AKINCI UCAV. This results in a total of 36 international agreements. 

In a recent strategic move, Baykar entered into a cooperation agreement with Leonardo. This deal could pave the way for expanding its presence in the European market.

Earlier this week, Baykar signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Leonardo. This move could open the doors of the European market for Baykar’s drones.
