China Welcomes PM Modi to Tianjin SCO Summit, Signals Warmer Diplomatic Mood
PM Modi is expected to visit China from 31st August to 1st September for Regional Shanghai cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
Amid US tariff tensions, Trump has imposed 25% additional tariffs and penalties on Indian exports. Despite this, China welcomes the Indian PM’s visit to the SCO in Tianjin.
“China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun.
SCO Summit is scheduled for 31st August to 1st September. It will bring leaders from 20 nations, including SCO 10 member nations. The summit will also host heads of 10 International organisations.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Gao remarked -“We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin Summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness”.
PM Modi’s visit to SCO meeting is clubbed with Japan’s annual bilateral summit.
PM Modi is expected to attend the annual bilateral summit with Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. This follows his participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Tianjin.
Bilateral ties between the two countries reached a six-decade low. The decline followed skirmishes between Indian and Chinese troops in the Ladakh sector of the LAC in April-May 2020. In the bloody clashes at least 20 Indian soldiers Died and 4 Chinese troops.
Both sides reached an Understanding, ending LAC standoff on October 21,2024 in the Russian city of Kazan.
Among the possible issues that can be discussed in SCO meet is the further steps to normalise relations. These include de-escalation on the LAC. Another step is the resumption of direct flights. Additionally, reopening of border trade points and people-to-people exchanges can be considered, they said.
