Mumbai Police Serve Notice to Kunal Kamra Over Remarks Against Eknath Shinde

Comedian Summoned Amid Ongoing Investigation

Mumbai Police have issued a notice to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra. This is in connection with a case related to allegedly derogatory comments about Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to officials, Kamra has been asked to appear before the Khar police station as part of the inquiry. The police have not disclosed the exact date for his appearance. However, sources reveal that Kamra has requested a week’s time to comply with the notice.

Political Storm Triggered by Comedy Show

The controversy started when Kamra performed a parody of a popular song. The song was from the 1997 Bollywood movie Dil Toh Pagal Hai. During the performance, he referred to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor). His jokes also touched on recent political events. He mentioned the 2022 Shiv Sena split. He also talked about the 2023 division within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The performance sparked outrage among Shiv Sena supporters, escalating into a political flashpoint in the state.

Venue Vandalized Following Performance

Members of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in response to Kamra’s performance. This club is located in Mumbai’s Khar area, where the show had taken place. The hotel hosting the venue was also damaged. An FIR was filed against Kamra. This was based on a complaint lodged by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel. He accused the comedian of making defamatory statements against the deputy chief minister.

Legal Action Against Sena Workers

In addition to the case against Kamra, police have also booked 40 Shiv Sena workers for vandalizing the comedy club. On Monday, police arrested local Shiv Sena leader Rahul Kanal. They also arrested 11 others. They were involved in the destruction of property. However, all were granted bail by a local court later that day.

Growing Political Tensions

The incident has intensified the already charged political atmosphere in Maharashtra. It highlights the ongoing sensitivity around political satire and freedom of expression in the state. The next steps in the investigation are important. Kamra’s anticipated appearance before the police is expected to draw significant public attention. The media is also likely to focus on this event.
