Trump-Era Trade Pressure Sees India Among Nations Considering Tariff Cuts

In a recent address to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, Jamieson Greer, a top trade official under former President Donald Trump, made a statement. He said that India is one of nearly 50 countries showing a willingness to lower trade tariffs. This follows the Trump administration’s assertive stance on trade reciprocity.

Greer pointed to what he described as a growing global shift toward fairer trade terms, citing disparities in tariff structures. While the U.S. maintains an average 5% tariff on agricultural imports, India’s average hovers around 39%, he noted.

“These imbalances have contributed to America’s declining manufacturing base and rising trade deficits,” Greer said. “The President recognized this as a national security emergency. The loss of nearly five million manufacturing jobs has been significant. Over 90,000 factories have closed since 1994. This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of one-sided economic arrangements.”

He named India as a country now indicating openness to easing both tariff and non-tariff barriers. Argentina, Vietnam, and Israel are also showing this openness. According to Greer, Trump’s broader trade reforms include sweeping tariffs on steel, aluminum, and foreign-manufactured auto parts. These reforms have prompted global reassessments of trade relationships.

“Since these measures were introduced, nearly 50 countries have approached us directly. They are exploring avenues for aligning with the President’s call for reciprocal trade,” Greer said. “Many have either begun discussions or shown intent to adjust their tariff structures.”

Greer also underscored a worrying trend in U.S. agriculture. He noted that the sector, once experiencing a trade surplus, had turned negative. This change occurred by the end of the Biden administration’s term. He attributed this shift to unfavorable global trade practices that have disadvantaged American farmers and producers.

Greer concluded that Trump’s trade strategies were not just about economics. They were also about safeguarding national strength. Additionally, they aimed to ensure that American industries remain globally competitive.
