US President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) decision. The department decided to revoke a $21 million grant. This grant was meant to support voter turnout efforts in India. Trump questioned why American taxpayers should fund such initiatives. He cited India’s economic strength and high tariffs as reasons for the cut.

“Why are we giving them this money? India has a lot of wealth. It also has some of the highest tariffs in the world,” Trump said at a press conference. He expressed respect for India and its Prime Minister. Still, he insisted that US resources should focus on domestic concerns. He referenced past spending on election security within the United States.

The funding withdrawal follows DOGE’s February 16 announcement. This announcement confirmed the cancellation of financial support earlier allocated to the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS). The move has sparked political debate in India. BJP leaders Amit Malviya and Rajeev Chandrasekhar have criticized the opposition Congress. They allege that Congress is inviting “external interference” in India’s electoral process.

DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has been aggressively cutting international aid projects deemed inefficient or unnecessary. The department outlined a broader rollback of US-funded initiatives. It scrapped hundreds of millions of dollars in expenditures. This includes $22 million for Moldova’s political engagement programs and $486 million in CEPPS-related grants worldwide. The cuts also targeted voter confidence efforts in Liberia and biodiversity conservation in Nepal.

Critics argue that the funding slash undermines the US’s longstanding foreign policy goal of promoting democracy abroad. But, Musk remains firm in his fiscal approach, stating that DOGE’s role is to “ensure every dollar is spent wisely.” The decision highlights a shift in US priorities, signaling a tougher stance on international assistance under Trump’s leadership.
