First Woman Pilot Assigned to IAF’s Jaguar Squadron

Flying Officer Tanushka Singh is the first woman pilot.

Flying Officer Tanushka Singh is the first woman pilot. She is permanently assigned to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Jaguar fighter jet squadron. This marks a significant step in the inclusion of women in combat roles within the IAF.

Flying Officer Tanushka comes from a military background, with her father and grandfather having served in the armed forces. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, she has lived in Mangaluru since 2007. She completed her schooling at DPS MRPL School in Suratkal and later studied at Sharada PU College in Mangaluru. She earned a B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology in 2022.

Flying OfficerTanushka initially considered a career in the Indian Army. She shifted her focus to the Air Force after learning about the opportunities available to women. She underwent training at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Tamil Nadu. Then, she received specialized training on the Hawk MK 132 aircraft.

While other women have flown the Jaguar during training, her permanent induction into the squadron is a first. The Jaguar is a key tactical strike aircraft for the IAF, known for its precision attack capabilities. Her assignment highlights the IAF’s increasing focus on gender inclusion in operational roles.

Flying Officer Tanushka will soon report to her squadron for active duty. Her journey reflects the growing role of women in the Indian military and serves as an inspiration for aspiring pilots.
