India Ramps Up Air Defence With ₹250 Crore Igla-S Missile Induction Amid Rising Pakistan Tensions

The Indian Army has taken a decisive step to strengthen its air defence shield. It has inducted a fresh consignment of advanced Igla-S missiles from Russia. This purchase is worth over ₹250 crore. The procurement comes in the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. This occurs amid escalating tensions with Pakistan.

Rapid Induction Under Emergency Procurement Powers

The Indian government granted Emergency Procurement (EP) powers. Under the fourth tranche of these powers, the Igla-S missile systems have been supplied. They have been inducted to provide rapid and effective air defence capabilities. These systems counter enemy aircraft, drones, and attack helicopters. These missiles are already being deployed to forward areas, especially along the western front with Pakistan.

Notably, these missile systems are being assembled domestically by Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited (ADSTL). This is under a technology transfer agreement with Russia’s Rosoboronexport. It reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing while maintaining strong international defence collaborations.

Strategic Deployment in Response to Pakistan’s Provocations

The acquisition aligns with India’s enhanced security posture following multiple ceasefire violations and inflammatory statements from Pakistan’s leadership. Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently threatened to attack Indian dams. This threat arises if water sharing is disrupted. Pakistan’s missile tests and continued cross-border shelling have also prompted India to elevate its military readiness.

Unlike Pakistan’s symbolic gestures and sabre-rattling, India’s response is grounded in operational preparedness. The Igla-S, a Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS), represents a major tactical upgrade. It is capable of intercepting low-flying targets, including modern aerial platforms, with high accuracy and mobility.

Indian Army’s Forward-Looking Defence Vision

The Indian Army has new deliveries. Defence sources confirmed that it also issued a tender for 48 additional launchers. Approximately 90 more Igla-S missiles will be procured under fast-track procedures. Advanced laser beam-riding versions of VSHORADS are being considered for future deployment. This development marks a significant leap in India’s air defence capabilities.

The Indian Air Force is also expected to receive similar missile systems, further enhancing India’s comprehensive aerial defence network.
