33rd Round of India-China Border Talks Held in Beijing

Diplomatic Discussions Continue

On March 25, 2025, India and China conducted a meeting in Beijing. This was the 33rd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination (WMCC) on Border Affairs. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (East Asia), Shri Gourangalal Das. On the other hand, Mr. Hong Liang, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department, represented the Chinese side. Both nations described the dialogue as constructive. They focused on reviewing the current situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). They also aimed at maintaining stability in border regions.

Focus on Border Management and Cooperation

Key discussions focused on enhancing border management strategies. They emphasized following through on commitments made during the 23rd Special Representatives (SR) meeting in December 2024. To reduce the possibility of border incidents, both sides agreed on the need for stronger diplomatic and military communication. There was also an emphasis on resuming cross-border exchanges. This includes cooperation on trans-border rivers. Another focus is restarting the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. Both of these had been affected by past tensions and the pandemic.

Commitment to Future Engagement

India and China expressed a commitment to prepare carefully for the next SR meeting. It will take place in India later in 2025. Additionally, during the visit, Shri Gourangalal Das met with Assistant Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Hong Lei, highlighting ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

Continued Efforts Toward Stability

The meeting reaffirmed the shared objective of resolving border issues through dialogue and cooperation. The talks did not achieve a concrete breakthrough on de-escalation. However, they showed both countries’ willingness to keep communication open. They are committed to working towards peace and stability along the LAC.
