Foreign secretary Vikram Misri meets Liu Jianchao in Beijing for High Level India-China Talks

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, on Sunday, and the two sides exchanged views on jointly implementing the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthening exchanges and dialogues, and promoting the improvement and healthy and stable development of India China relations, as well as international and regional issues of common concern.

India-China relations in early 2025 continued the momentum of exchanges and stabilization seen in late 2024, as India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri kicked off his trip to Beijing on Sunday, in another indication that India and China are restoring a mechanism to enhance dialogue and work on specific issues.

On Friday, China welcomed Misri’s visit and sounded positive about its outcome, saying the development followed a series of interactions between top leaders and officials from both countries after over four years of stalled ties over the Ladakh military standoff.
“We welcome Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri’s travel to China for the meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between China and India,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing in the Chinese national capital.

Mao said that last October, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached important common understandings on improving and growing bilateral relations during their meeting in October on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. Recently, both sides have acted to earnestly implement these common understandings, she said.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is on a two day visit to Beijing on 26-27 January 2025 for a meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between India and China. Announcing the Foreign Secretary’s China visit, MEA had said on Thursday, that the resumption of this bilateral mechanism flows from the agreement at the leadership level to discuss the next steps for India-China relations, including in the political, economic, and people-to-people domains. The meeting comes after four years marking the resumption of dialogue for a broader understanding of the LAC issue.
After Doval’s visit, Misri is the second high-level Indian official to travel to Beijing in about a month. Apart from the LAC issue, the two sides will discuss several issues at the talks, including resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. China has been proposing to resume direct flights between the two countries and facilitate the issuance of visas to Chinese citizens.
