Ancient Stitched Ship Launched in Goa Revives Maritime Heritage

On February 26, 2025, a unique vessel known as the Ancient Stitched Ship was launched. This event took place at the Hodi Innovations shipyard in Goa. It was conducted under the guidance of Rear Admiral KM Ramakrishnan, Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area. The ceremony took place at M/s Hodi Innovations Ltd on Divar Island. It brought together traditional artisans. Indian Navy officials and shipyard personnel participated in the celebration of India’s rich maritime legacy.

The vessel, constructed entirely in Goa, is a tribute to traditional shipbuilding techniques. It is crafted using wood, coir, and natural resin. It employs coconut fiber stitching. These techniques include age-old wooden joinery that were once the backbone of Indian maritime construction. The project involved collaboration with expert artisans from various parts of the country. A renowned team was included. They were led by master craftsman Babu Shankaran from Kerala.

The launch event underscored a broader initiative to revive India’s maritime heritage. Rear Admiral Ramakrishnan highlighted the historical importance of stitched ships and announced plans to dock the vessel at Karwar port. At the port, Captain Dilip Donde is the country’s first solo global circumnavigator. He is set to mentor a Navy team. The team is preparing for ocean voyages aboard the ship.

The project was the brainchild of economist and historian Sanjeev Sanyal. It has been executed through a tripartite agreement between Hodi Innovations, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Culture. Hodi Innovations is based in Goa. The company is well known for building a range of vessels. These include sailing boats, motorboats, and patrol boats for the Indian defence forces. It leverages its expertise in steel, aluminum, and fibre-reinforced plastic construction.

This launch is an important milestone. It celebrates and preserves India’s ancient shipbuilding traditions. It also paves the way for future maritime endeavors.
