Indian Navy and Coast Guard Undertake Courageous MEDEVAC Operation

The Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard performed a notable act of maritime cooperation and valor. They successfully conducted a challenging medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) in the early hours of March 21, 2025. The operation began to rescue injured crew members aboard the MV Heilan Star. This is a Panama-flagged cargo vessel. It was positioned roughly 230 nautical miles west of Goa.

Emergency Alert and Swift Response

The issue emerged late on March 20. The Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai informed naval authorities about four crew members. These crew members had sustained severe burn injuries. These crew members were in urgent need of medical attention, triggering immediate action from naval forces.

Deployment of Naval Assets

The Indian Navy reacted quickly. They redirected two deployed warships — INS Vikrant and INS Deepak — to the distressed vessel’s location. As daylight broke, a Seaking helicopter from INS Vikrant initiated a daring rescue operation. It bravely faced rough sea conditions. It winched up three injured crew members. They included two Chinese nationals and one Indonesian sailor. Sadly, the fourth crew member succumbed to injuries before rescue efforts could reach him.

Safe Transfer and Medical Aid

After the successful evacuation, the injured personnel were airlifted to the naval airbase INS Hansa in Goa. From there, they were quickly transported to a civilian medical facility for specialized care and further treatment.

Demonstrating India’s Maritime Readiness

This mission underscores the Indian Navy’s and Coast Guard’s unwavering dedication to maritime safety and humanitarian relief. Their prompt action in international waters demonstrates India’s advancing maritime capabilities. It also shows its continued commitment to safeguarding lives at sea.
