COAS General Upendra Dwivedi Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Fallen Comrade Naib Subedar Baldev Singh of 18 JAK RIF

Delhi Cantt, 21 April 2025: It was an emotional and deeply personal gesture. Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi paid his respects. He honored Naib Subedar Baldev Singh of the 18th Battalion. This unit is part of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (18 JAK RIF). Subedar Singh laid down his life while serving at the challenging Kumar Post. This location is in the Siachen Glacier—the world’s highest battlefield.

Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Shraddhanjali Sthal

The solemn ceremony was held at Shraddhanjali Sthal, Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment. General Dwivedi placed a wreath on the mortal remains of the fallen Junior Commissioned Officer. For the Army Chief, this went beyond a formal duty. It was a deeply felt farewell to a soldier he once served alongside.

A Bond Forged in Service

Naib Subedar Baldev Singh joined the 18 JAK RIF in 2002 during Operation Rakshak in the Kashmir Valley. His path crossed with General Dwivedi in 2003, when the latter assumed command of the battalion. Baldev Singh was then a young and promising soldier in Delta Company. His CO selected him for specialist training in the Battalion’s Signal Platoon.

Recognising his determination and skill, General Dwivedi personally mentored him as an Infantry Signaller. Baldev Singh quickly gained the trust of the CO’s operational team. He earned praise for his bravery. His discipline and professional excellence were also acknowledged.

Service Marked by Courage and Dedication

Over the years, Baldev Singh’s relentless commitment to his duties earned him steady promotions. About a year ago, he was elevated to the rank of Naib Subedar. His enthusiasm and ever-positive outlook made him a pillar within his unit. His bond with General Dwivedi evolved into one of mutual admiration and respect. This bond was rooted in shared experiences and battlefield challenges.

Final Sacrifice at Siachen

Naib Subedar Baldev Singh was deployed with the Signal Platoon at the perilous Kumar Post in Northern Glacier, Siachen. On 20 April 2025, he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. His loss has been deeply felt by the unit. Those who knew him as a courageous and committed soldier also feel his loss profoundly.

A Legacy That Lives On

General Dwivedi’s tribute stands as a testament to the camaraderie, honour, and shared sacrifices that define the Indian Army. The Army Chief expressed profound grief. He extended unwavering support to the bereaved family. Baldev Singh’s spirit and legacy will remain etched in the annals of the regiment. They will be in the hearts of future generations.

The Indian Army salutes Naib Subedar Baldev Singh’s dedication, and honours his sacrifice with the utmost reverence.
