Defence and Tech: India’s Path to Global Leadership

India’s Technology Sector to Reach $300-350 Billion in Next Five Years: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

India’s technology sector is poised for rapid growth. It is expected to reach $300-350 billion within the next five years, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. He spoke at the 16th Foundation Day of IIT Mandi on February 24, 2025. He highlighted India’s emergence as a global technology hub. This growth is backed by 1.25 lakh start-ups and 110 unicorns. This makes it the third-largest start-up ecosystem in the world.

Rajnath Singh emphasized the need for innovation and entrepreneurship. He urged students and researchers to become technology disruptors. They should aim to innovate rather than merely adapt. He stressed India must lead advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, cybersecurity, and quantum technology. This leadership will help India maintain its edge in the evolving digital landscape.

The Defence Minister also underlined India’s progress in defence self-reliance. He stated that 88% of ammunition production is now indigenous. Defence exports reached ₹23,000 crore in 2023-24. The target is ₹50,000 crore by 2029. He encouraged IIT Mandi to play a pivotal role in defence-related technological advancements. He emphasized AI-driven warfare and indigenous AI chip development.

Singh highlighted India’s digital revolution. He pointed out that the country’s telecom sector is now the second-largest globally. Initiatives like UPI have set new global benchmarks in digital transactions. He urged students to contribute to India’s transformation into a developed nation by 2047. This can be achieved through technological innovation by adopting the principles of Initiate, Improve, and Transform (IIT).

India is rapidly advancing in technology and digital infrastructure. The next five years are expected to be crucial. This period will solidify its position as a global leader in innovation and self-reliance.
