DRDO and Indian Navy Successfully Test Indigenous Vertical-Launch Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile

Successful Trial Off Odisha Coast

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy conducted a successful flight test. They tested the domestically developed Vertically-Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM). The trial occurred around 12:00 PM on March 26, 2025. It took place at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the Odisha coast.

The missile launched from a land-based vertical launcher. It targeted a fast-moving aerial threat. The engagement occurred at extremely close range and low altitude. The successful interception demonstrated the system’s ability to counter threats near boundary-low altitude scenarios.

Precision and Performance Validation

During the test, the missile effectively neutralized its target, executing high-turn maneuvers necessary for engaging threats at close range. This confirmed its agility, reliability, and pinpoint accuracy. The trial involved deploying all key weapon system components. These were arranged in a combat-ready configuration. This included the missile with an indigenous Radio Frequency seeker, a Multi-Function Radar, and a Weapon Control System.

Various range instruments developed at ITR Chandipur captured flight data. These instruments verified the missile’s performance. They ensured it met all required parameters.

Defence Leadership Applauds the Milestone

Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, the Indian Navy, and industry partners for this significant achievement. He emphasized that the successful test highlights India’s robust research and development capabilities in defence technology. He further noted that the VLSRSAM would serve as a powerful force multiplier for the Indian Navy.

Dr. Samir V Kamat is the Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO. He also extended congratulations to the teams involved. He stated that the advanced missile system, featuring state-of-the-art technology, would significantly enhance the operational capabilities of India’s Armed Forces.
