The Government of India has made significant progress in securing the 4,096.7 km long India-Bangladesh border, with 3,232.218 km of fencing completed. Yet, 864.482 km remains unfenced. This includes 174 km of gaps which are not practical to fill. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai provided this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The fencing project is a crucial step in curbing cross-border crimes, smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal movement.
The Indian government has emphasized its commitment to security measures. These include fencing and are in compliance with bilateral protocols. Agreements between the two nations are also adhered to. India’s Border Security Force (BSF) regularly discusses with Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). This ensures that both sides uphold cooperation in border management. India has also conveyed its expectation that Bangladesh will adhere to past agreements and work collaboratively to tackle cross-border crime.
Despite progress, the completion of the fencing project faces multiple challenges. The remaining 864. 482 km of unfenced border faces several issues. These include land acquisition disputes and objections from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Additionally, limited working seasons and difficult terrain, like marshy lands and landslide-prone areas, complicate matters. These factors have slowed down the project’s execution, leaving vulnerable stretches of the border open to illegal activities.
The Indian government remains committed to strengthening border security and enhancing surveillance to ensure a safer international boundary. Significant progress has been made. The focus now is on addressing existing hurdles. Efforts are underway to work with Bangladesh to close the remaining gaps. The fencing project aims to improve border management. It seeks to reduce crime and reinforce India’s security infrastructure along one of its most sensitive international borders.
