Indian Army to Receive 70,000 AK-203 Rifles in 2025

AK-203 rifles offer superior accuracy and lightweight construction, compatible with advanced optics and accessories.

Indian Army is set to get 70,000 AK-203 assault rifles in 2025. An extra 100,000 units will follow in 2026, according to defence sources. This delivery is part of a larger agreement with Russia. The aim is to equip Indian soldiers with one of the most advanced and reliable assault rifles in the world. Indian Army has already received 35000 of these rifles in 2024.

The AK-203 began replacing the aging INSAS rifles now in service. It is manufactured under a joint Indo-Russian venture in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The indigenous content in these AK-203 rifles will be increased up to 30 percent this year. In later supplies, the indigenous content will be further enhanced. The AK-203 offers improved ergonomics, durability, and adaptability. It provides enhanced firepower. This makes it ideal for various combat scenarios, including counter terrorism operations and high-altitude warfare.

The AK-203 is a modernized version of the legendary Kalashnikov series. It offers superior accuracy and lightweight construction. It is also compatible with advanced optics and accessories. The rifle is chambered for 7.62×39mm ammunition, which delivers greater stopping power compared to the 5.56mm INSAS rifles.

This procurement aligns with India’s broader defence indigenization goals under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. It ensures that most of the rifles are manufactured domestically by the Indo-Russian joint venture Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL). This not only enhances India’s self-reliance in arms production but also strengthens bilateral defence cooperation with Russia.

The Indian Army has prioritized upgrading infantry weapons. This decision is due to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) tensions with China and persistent cross-border threats from Pakistan. The AK-203 is providing troops with a more robust, easy-to-keep, and combat-proven firearm, significantly improving their operational readiness.

The AK-203 contract is a deal between India and Russia to manufacture AK-203 assault rifles in India. The contract was signed in July 2021 and is worth over ₹5,000 crore. The contract involves a joint venture between Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) and Rosoboronexport (RoE). The contract involves the production of over 6.1 lakh AK-203 rifles. The contract involves technology transfer from Russia

Timeline

  • The first batch of 70,000 AK-203s were delivered to the Indian Army on January 25, 2022
  • Licensed production started in January 2023
  • Between May and July 2024, another batch of 35,000 rifles were delivered

The upcoming deliveries mark a crucial milestone in India’s defence modernization plans. The country is enhancing its military capabilities. The AK-203 rifles will play a key role in making sure the forces are better-equipped and combat-ready for the future.
