India’s Hanuman Doctrine: Operation Sindoor Sends a Message of Justice, Not War

Targeting Terror, Not Civilians

In the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted India’s military philosophy. He evoked Lord Hanuman’s stance from the Ramayana: “Jinh mohi maara te main mare”. This means, “Those who struck me, I struck back.” Singh clarified that India’s action was a measured and restrained response. It was aimed solely at those responsible for the Pahalgam terrorist attack. In this attack, 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were killed.

India avoided any civilian or military Pakistani targets, focusing exclusively on terrorist camps run by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Operation Sindoor: Justice, Not Escalation

Held on the night of 6–7 May, Operation Sindoor was designed to cripple Pakistan-based terror infrastructure without escalating into full-scale conflict. India’s air and ground precision strikes destroyed nine major terror hideouts across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), including key facilities used for training and launching cross-border attacks.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the strikes as non-escalatory, proportionate and necessary. He pointed to clear evidence. It links the Pahalgam attack to terror modules operating from Pakistan. This includes The Resistance Front (TRF) – a front for the UN-proscribed LeT.

India’s Strategic Messaging to the World

India framed Operation Sindoor not just as retaliation, but as a responsible counter-terror strike aligned with global expectations. The government referred to the UN Security Council’s recent statement. It demanded accountability for the Pahalgam attack. The attack involved heinous violence against civilians.

NSA Ajit Doval briefed his counterparts in the US, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Japan. He assured them that India does not seek escalation. However, he emphasized India’s preparedness to respond resolutely to any hostile move by Pakistan.

Exposing Pakistan’s Duplicity

Indian officials reminded the international community of Pakistan’s history of deception—from shielding fugitives like Sajid Mir to manipulating FATF assessments. Misri reiterated that Pakistan continues to serve as a safe haven for globally sanctioned terrorists, despite international scrutiny.

Hanuman’s Policy as a Diplomatic Model

Rajnath Singh framed India’s approach as Dharma-driven—firm yet ethical. Citing Lord Hanuman’s restraint in Lanka, Singh said India acts only against those who inflict harm, without touching innocents. This principle is now echoed in military doctrine. It reflects India’s aspiration to be a moral and strategic power in an increasingly polarized world.

India’s message is clear: It will not initiate conflict, but terrorism will no longer go unanswered. Operation Sindoor was not merely a strike—it was a strategic declaration of India’s evolved security doctrine.
