Three Policemen Killed, Three Terrorists Eliminated in Intense Kathua Encounter
Three policemen lost their lives in a fierce encounter in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. Seven others were injured, including a senior officer. The gunbattle began at around 8 AM in the dense Ghati Juthana forest of Rajbagh. It resulted in the neutralization of three heavily armed terrorists. Authorities believe that at least two more militants are holed up in the rugged terrain. This situation prompts security forces to maintain heightened vigilance.
The operation was part of a broader counter-insurgency initiative. It targeted suspected terrorists who had recently infiltrated the region. Reportedly, they came from across the border. Security forces acted on intelligence reports. They launched a search mission in the forested area. The mission triggered a deadly confrontation when the terrorists opened fire.
Among the injured were six policemen, including the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) leading the operation. Three of his personal security officers succumbed to their injuries at the encounter site despite evacuation efforts (Sgct. Tariq ahmad, Sgct. Jaswant Singh and Sgct. Balwinder. Singh).
The critically injured SDPO was airlifted to a military hospital following the shootout. Two other wounded policemen received treatment at Kathua hospital. They are reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, two army personnel sustained injuries and were transferred to a military medical facility.
As the battle raged, special forces were deployed to strengthen the security perimeter. Drone surveillance later detected the bodies of two militants deep within a gorge. However, security personnel have yet to retrieve them due to challenging terrain and the onset of nightfall.
Throughout the encounter, local residents reported continuous gunfire and explosions. Many young men from nearby villages actively supported security forces. They carried supplies and equipment into the difficult landscape. This cooperation reflects growing public frustration with rising militant activity in the region.
Despite pausing active operations overnight, security forces continue to maintain a tight cordon around the area. Authorities plan to resume their search at dawn, with strong indications that two more militants remain at large.
Officials suspect that the militants involved in the Kathua encounter belong to a recently infiltrated terrorist cell. This cell is possibly linked to a Pakistan-based outfit. Earlier in the week, security personnel intercepted a group of suspected terrorists in the Hiranagar sector. Some terrorists managed to evade capture. Intelligence suggests that these insurgents later regrouped near Jakhole village, culminating in Thursday’s violent engagement.
Recovered weapons indicate that the militants were prepared for sustained combat. These weapons include M4 carbine magazines, grenades, and improvised explosive device (IED) components. The discovery of food supplies further suggests plans for an extended operation, raising concerns about additional infiltrations along the border.
In response to the attack, security forces across the region are on high alert. Additional personnel have been deployed, and surveillance efforts have intensified in areas vulnerable to infiltration. This latest encounter highlights the ongoing threat of cross-border terrorism. It emphasizes the challenges faced by security agencies in safeguarding the region.
As operations continue, security forces remain focused on eliminating the remaining threats and ensuring the retrieval of all neutralized militants. The situation in Kathua remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments to prevent further escalation.
