Swift Police Action Saves 100 Pilgrims in Rishikesh

Rising Ganga Waters Strands 100 Devotees at Janki Jhula Ghat, Rishikesh – Swift Rescue by पुलिस

At Janki Jhula Ghat near Rishikesh, a dramatic turn of events occurred. Approximately 100 devotees from Haryana were stranded on a riverine island. A sudden surge in the Ganga’s water level caused this during Mahashivratri. The unforeseen rise caused panic among the pilgrims, who had gathered to take a sacred dip in the holy river.

The devotees had arrived at the ghat to join in the traditional Ganga bath. This was on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, according to officials from the Munikireti Police Station. The water level was initially low. Many ventured onto an island situated in the middle of the Ganga. They aimed to carry out their rituals. But, moments later, the water level unexpectedly rose, trapping the group on the island and prompting desperate cries for help.

Acting swiftly, the vigilant water police stationed at Janki Jhula Ghat launched an immediate rescue operation. Inspector Pradeep Chauhan of Munikireti Police recounted that the sound of the distressed pilgrims reached the rescue team without delay. Under his command, brave water police personnel risked their lives. Rajendra Singh, Ravi Rana, Videsh Chauhan, Pushkar Rawat, and Mahendra Chaudhary were among them. They navigated the turbulent waters to bring the stranded devotees to safety.

The rescue operation was conducted with commendable speed and precision. This ensured that all the pilgrims were safely evacuated from the island. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported following the incident, although the panic left many shaken.

This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of river water levels. It highlights the critical role that the water police play in ensuring public safety at major religious sites. Rishikesh continues to welcome millions of devotees each year. Authorities urge pilgrims to exercise caution. They should remain alert to sudden changes in water conditions during festivities.
