“A Tragedy of Unimaginable Magnitude”: PM Modi Reflects on 2002 Gujarat Riots in Lex Fridman Podcast

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in an extensive interview with AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman. They discussed various topics, ranging from PM Modi’s early life and governance to global issues. These included the Ukraine conflict and relations with Pakistan. When asked about the 2002 Gujarat riots, PM Modi provided a detailed response. He shared the lessons he took from that period. He also shed light on the events leading up to the violence.

Dispelling Myths About the Godhra Incident

PM Modi addressed what he called a “false narrative” surrounding the Godhra train burning incident. He pointed out that before 2002, Gujarat had experienced over 250 riots, with communal tensions being a recurring issue. He also highlighted how, at the time, terrorism and violence were surging globally. However, he emphasized that since 2002, Gujarat has not witnessed any similar large-scale communal unrest.

The Prime Minister rejected the allegations made against him. He stressed that his government does not indulge in vote-bank politics. Instead, it follows the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.” He noted that despite efforts to tarnish his image after the riots, justice ultimately prevailed, with courts exonerating him.

Context Leading Up to the 2002 Riots

PM Modi explained the circumstances leading to the tragic events. He recounted incidents that had created a volatile atmosphere in the country. He mentioned the hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight on December 24, 1999. The flight was from Kathmandu to Delhi and was diverted to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Hundreds of Indian passengers were held hostage, causing national turmoil.

Further elaborating on the turbulent period, he mentioned several major terror attacks, including:

  • The 2000 Red Fort attack in Delhi
  • The September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States
  • The October 2001 attack on the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
  • The December 13, 2001, assault on the Indian Parliament

According to PM Modi, these back-to-back incidents had already created an extremely tense environment across India. In such situations, even a minor spark could lead to unrest.

Taking Charge as Gujarat’s Chief Minister Amid Crisis

PM Modi recalled his appointment as Gujarat’s Chief Minister on October 7, 2001. This was a time when the state was still recovering from a catastrophic earthquake. The disaster had left thousands dead. His primary focus after assuming office was the rehabilitation of the affected communities. He had no prior administrative experience. He had to quickly adapt to governance. At the same time, he was preparing for his first election as a public representative.

The Godhra Tragedy and Its Aftermath

Modi reflected on the fateful day of February 27, 2002. He recalled being in the Assembly for the budget session. News broke of the horrifying Godhra train incident. He described it as an incident of unimaginable scale, where people were burned alive. Given the already volatile backdrop of terrorism and previous attacks, the situation became even more explosive.

Despite the prevailing tensions, PM Modi asserted that claims about the 2002 riots being the worst in Gujarat’s history were misleading. He argued that the claims were incorrect. He argued that communal violence had been a longstanding issue in the state. Riots occurred frequently over trivial disputes. For instance, the riots of 1969 lasted nearly six months. However, following the 2002 violence, Gujarat has not seen any major riots, a fact that he believes speaks for itself.

Judicial Investigations and Final Verdict

The Prime Minister underlined that the judiciary conducted a thorough investigation into the riots. He stated that political opponents, who were in power at the time, made every effort to implicate him. However, after two meticulous legal reviews, the courts ruled in his favor, clearing his name. He emphasized that those truly responsible were held accountable and faced legal consequences.

PM Modi shared this detailed account. He provided his perspective on a period that continues to be a subject of debate. His remarks underscored his belief in justice. He emphasized governance beyond vote-bank politics. He also expressed his commitment to maintaining peace and development in Gujarat.
