CM Nitish Kumar Silent While Murders Rise in Bihar

Bihar has been in headlines for quite some time now, and it is not so for good reasons. The law and order in the state has deteriorated a lot. People do not feel safe even in the capital city of Patna. Citizen’s faith in the administration has been shaken. CM Nitish Kumar, also called ‘Sushasan Babu’, has not released a statement.

Murder Count Mounts

On 4th of July, Gopal Khemka was murdered in close vicinity of a police station. The police claimed they had solved the case of the businessman. However, criminals continued their activities fearlessly. After Khemka, Ramakant Yadav, a sand trader, was killed on July 10 in Patna. On the following day, Vikram Jha, the owner of Trishna mart – a grocery shop, was shot dead.

In the month of July, more than 35 murders have been reported in the state of Bihar. 31 murders in 11 days is a shocking figure. With the assembly elections approaching, the opposition has opened fire upon the government regarding law and order issues.

Statistics Sow Discomfort

Significantly, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports that Bihar ranks among the state’s top five states for violent crimes. This ranking has been consistent. This situation persists. This has been the case between 2017 and 2022. At 82 incidents/year, Patna leads in violent crimes in the state.

A study by the State Crime Records Bureau highlights a trend between 2015 and 2024. The crime rates in Bihar have risen. This rise is correlated to the increase in the sale of illegal arms and ammunition in the state.

High-Level Meet, Low Impact

After the murder of Gopal Khemka, the Chief Minister had held a high-level meeting at his residence to discuss the law and order situation. He had instructed the DGP to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure strict action against the perpetrators of crime. Negligent officials and policemen must also be punished. CM Nitish reviewed the steps being taken to control crime. He stated that law and order is the top priority of the Bihar government. He reiterated the importance of speedy trial and timely action against antisocial elements.

Public Fear Deepens

However, crime reports continue to be filed in Bihar with no end in sight. No statement has been received from CM Nitish Kumar on this matter. At the rate that crime is increasing, it seems criminals are unafraid of police action. Businessmen are being targeted constantly. This series of murders is concerning and the people are looking for answers from their leaders.
