Paramilitary forces have been stationed outside her residence. This comes after the incident ignited concerns on law-and-order situation in the national capital.
Police officials said the accused, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Sakriya Khimjibhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, is currently in five-day police custody. Officers said they will also take Khimjibhai to every location he visited in Delhi. Whatever the accused has revealed during interrogation is being checked. The Delhi Police are also in touch with the Rajkot police.
The assault took place on Wednesday morning at CM’s Civil Lines camp office during a public interaction session. According to the Delhi CMO, the attack appeared to be part of a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her.” Gupta was taken to hospital for a medical examination following the incident.
An attempt-to-murder case under Sections 109(1), 132, and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the accused. Police records show Khimjibhai has a criminal history and was previously booked in five cases, including a knife attack.
Delhi minister Parvesh Sahib Singh alleged that the accused had been surveying the CM’s movements. “So far, we have come to know that the individual was doing a recce for the last 24 hours. He did recce at her Shalimar Bagh residence too yesterday…She has injuries in her hand, shoulder and head. Doctor is examining her…”
“Delhi has received a CM. She has been conducting Jan Sunwai at her residence every day. About 1000-2000 people used to come to her every day from across the Delhi-NCR…What happened today is highly condemnable. We met the CM, she was injured.
He did recce at her Shalimar Bagh residence too yesterday. He stayed the night in Civil Lines area itself. When he came in today, he had no paper in his hand.
He met her and immediately attacked her…She has injuries in her hand, shoulder and head. Doctors examined her…
CCTV footage shows the accused conducting a recce at Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s Shalimar Bagh home on 19th August.
Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday sharply reacted to the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. He stated that differences of opinion are acceptable. Opposition is also acceptable. However, there can be no place for violence.
He also expressed confidence that the Delhi Police would take appropriate action.
The accused’s mother, Bhanuben, confirms that her son is not affiliated with any political party. He went to Delhi to protest against the Supreme Court’s order banning stray dogs on streets in Delhi-NCR.
She further remarked that his son is a pure animal lover. He loves dogs, cats, and cows and went to Delhi. He joined the protest against the Supreme Court’s stray dog orders. These orders required relocating them all in shelters in a confined area.
“He loves dogs, cows and birds. That is why he was upset after the SC said all the stray dogs in Delhi should be captured. He went to Haridwar a few days back. Then, he called us. He said he would go to Delhi to participate in protests in support of dogs,” she said.
“That’s all he told us over the phone when we asked when he would return”- Bhanuben said.
One attendee reported- “She (Rekha Gupta) was listening to the programme when the incident happened. We heard noise coming from behind and by the time we turned around, the police had taken the attacker away. So yes, the attack did happen, and Rekha ji was completely in shock”.
Another attendee, Shailendra Kumar, said, “I had come from Uttam Nagar with a complaint over sewer. When I reached the gates, chaos broke out because the CM was attacked. This is wrong…”
Back in Rajkot, a neighbour of the accused described him as quiet and cordial. “We never had any problems with him and he was cordial with everyone here. He would come, have food at his house and leave. He worked in a temple and seemed like a nice, normal man,” the neighbour said.
