India Announces Stringent Diplomatic and Security Measures in Response to Pahalgam Terror Attack

Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. This included one Nepali national. The Indian government has announced a series of strong diplomatic and strategic measures. These measures aim at isolating Pakistan and tightening security.

CCS Holds Emergency Meeting

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They held an emergency meeting late Tuesday evening. The purpose was to review the situation. The CCS was briefed on the nature of the attack. It occurred on April 22. They were also informed about the likely involvement of Pakistan-based terror outfits.

The CCS condemned the attack in the strongest terms. They offered condolences to the victims’ families. They also expressed hope for the speedy recovery of those injured. The government also acknowledged the global outpouring of support and solidarity. Many nations issued strong statements against the act of terror.

Evidence of Cross-Border Involvement

Intelligence inputs presented during the meeting pointed to direct cross-border links. These links indicate that the attack may have been orchestrated by groups operating from Pakistani territory. The incident comes at a time of peaceful elections in Jammu and Kashmir. There is a return to normalcy and economic progress. This makes the attack appear timed to disrupt stability.

Key Measures Announced

In response, the Indian government unveiled a set of major actions:

• Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty: The 1960 agreement between India and Pakistan has been put on hold. This will continue until Pakistan takes verifiable steps to end its support for cross-border terrorism.
• Closure of Attari Check Post: The Integrated Check Post at Attari has been shut with immediate effect. Those who entered India legally may return before May 1.
• Cancellation of SAARC Visa Exemptions: All visa exemptions for Pakistani nationals under the SAARC scheme stand revoked. Those currently in India have 48 hours to exit.
• Expulsion of Military Diplomats: Pakistani defence officials posted in New Delhi have been declared persona non grata. They must leave within a week. India will also withdraw its own military advisors from Islamabad.
• Reduction in Diplomatic Staff: Both nations will reduce the strength of their High Commissions. Each will have 30 members by May 1, 2025.

Government Vows to Bring Perpetrators to Justice

The CCS reaffirmed that India will leave no stone unturned in holding the attackers and their sponsors accountable. Officials cited the recent extradition of terrorist Tahawwur Rana as an example. It demonstrates India’s determined pursuit of justice. They reiterated that this resolve will continue with full force.
