India Brings 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana Home in High-Security Operation
Tahawwur Hussain Rana is one of the accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He has been extradited to India from the United States. This was done in a tightly coordinated international mission involving elite Indian and U.S. agencies.
After the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed his final appeal, authorities moved swiftly. Rana was escorted by U.S. Marshals to Miami, where a specially chartered Gulfstream G550 was waiting. On board were officers from India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA). There were also commandos from the National Security Guard (NSG). They are trained in counter-terror and anti-hijack operations.
The aircraft made a brief overnight halt in Bucharest, Romania, before continuing toward India. To avoid Pakistan’s airspace, the route was carefully planned via the Gulf and Arabian Sea, entering India through Gujarat.
Touchdown in Delhi and Formal Arrest
Rana landed at Delhi’s Palam Technical Airport around 6:22 PM on Thursday. Upon arrival, the NIA formally arrested him and conducted a medical check. A photo released with three NIA officials confirmed his handover.
Tight Security Around a High-Value Accused
Rana, a former doctor in the Pakistani army, is considered a high-risk individual. His transfer involved NSG’s elite Black Cat commandos. They specialize in high-threat missions and urban warfare. This highlights the seriousness of the operation.
Strategic Aircraft for a Sensitive Task
The Gulfstream G550 — used by U.S. military forces and capable of flying 12,000 km non-stop. This aircraft was chosen for its reliability and range. These features make it ideal for covert, long-distance missions.
Rana’s return is a milestone for justice in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case. The attacks claimed 166 lives, including six U.S. citizens. His extradition brings Indian investigators closer to uncovering the full extent of the conspiracy behind the attacks.
