Public Safety or Animal Cruelty? Rahul Gandhi Challenges SC’s Stray Dogs Removal Plan

Rahul Gandhi leader of opposition slammed Supreme court’s directive of removing Stray Dogs from Delhi-NCR region within six weeks. Calling the policy as “a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy.”

Rahul Gandhi’s Remark on Recent Supreme Court’s Verdict

Rahul Gandhi emphasised that the policy of the Apex court is impractical. It is not backed by a scientific approach. The decision is insensitive towards animals.  Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care, he noted is a need of the hour.

In a post on ‘X’, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “The SC’s directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy. These voiceless souls are not “problems” to be erased.”

“Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe – without cruelty. Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand,” the post further read.

What Supreme Court had Ordered in Stray Dogs Ruling?

“Round up all stray dogs from all localities. This includes localities on the outskirts of Delhi. Shift them to some other place, whether sterilised or not sterilised. The society must feel free and safe. There should be no stray dogs roaming around. The bench addressed the Delhi government. It also communicated with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Authorities in Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram were also contacted.

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan was hearing a petition initiated on its own. The subject was the “alarming and disturbing” increase in stray dog attacks. They have also ordered contempt against any person or group obstructing the capture drive.

The apex court directed authorities in Delhi-NCR to establish a helpline. This helpline is for registering dog bite complaints. The offending animal is to be picked up “within four hours” of a report.
