Full Support for Caste Census, But with Conditions: Rahul Gandhi Puts Forward 4 Key Demands
The Central Government has officially declared that the upcoming national census will include caste-based data. This decision marks a significant move toward inclusive governance. Following the announcement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a press conference on Tuesday. He expressed support and laid out critical demands for the process.

Rahul Gandhi reiterated Congress’s long-standing position advocating for a caste census and removing the 50% cap on reservations. He welcomed the Centre’s announcement but pressed for a timeline:
“We need to know when the census will actually happen,” he emphasized.
He acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s earlier remark. Modi stated that India has only four classes — the poor, middle class, rich, and super-rich. He argued that understanding the caste composition within these economic groups is vital.
“This is the first step, but we must go beyond just data collection,” he added.
Gandhi assured full cooperation from Congress in shaping the caste census framework:
“This was our vision, and we’ve consistently pushed for it. The Centre’s decision, even after 11 years, is a step toward social justice.”
He congratulated party workers and activists who championed this cause, saying he is proud of their commitment.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy tweeted in support. He credited Rahul Gandhi’s vision during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. This vision sparked the nationwide demand. He noted:
“Telangana was the first state to conduct such a survey since 1931. The findings showed 56.32% of the population belongs to backward communities.”
The state legislature has since proposed 42% reservation for OBCs in education, jobs, and politics based on the data.
“Telangana leads today, and the rest of India will follow tomorrow,” Reddy concluded.
