Remembering Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: The Architect of Modern India

On the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, tributes poured in from across the country. Leaders, scholars, and citizens remembered the towering jurist. He was an economist and social reformer who played a pivotal role in shaping modern India.

Born in 1891 in Mhow (present-day Madhya Pradesh), Dr. Ambedkar rose from a deeply marginalized background to become the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. A relentless crusader against caste discrimination, his life’s mission was rooted in the ideals of justice, equality, and fraternity.

The Father of the Indian Constitution

Dr. Ambedkar’s most celebrated contribution remains his role as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution. He had the monumental responsibility of laying the legal foundation for a newly independent nation. He emphasized individual rights, freedom of religion, and protection for the oppressed classes.

His vision gave India one of the most progressive and inclusive constitutions in the world. In his historic speech on November 26, 1949, Ambedkar warned against the perils of hero-worship in politics. He also highlighted the dangers of social inequality. These messages continue to resonate today.

A Scholar Beyond Compare

Ambedkar was a formidable intellect, holding doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics. He was one of the earliest Indians to receive such international recognition. His academic work, particularly on the Indian economy and caste system, remains foundational to many disciplines.

Despite his academic brilliance, Ambedkar’s early life was marred by systemic discrimination. Denied basic rights as a Dalit, he faced exclusion in schools and public spaces. These experiences fueled his lifelong fight for social justice.

Champion of the Marginalized

Ambedkar believed that political freedom was incomplete without social and economic justice. Throughout his life, he campaigned against untouchability and caste-based discrimination. In 1936, he famously said, “I was born a Hindu, but I will not die a Hindu.” This highlighted his disillusionment with the caste system.

In 1956, a few months before his death, he converted to Buddhism along with millions of his followers. This initiated a major social movement that continues to this day.

Legacy and Relevance Today

Ambedkar’s legacy goes far beyond statues and commemorations. His ideas have found renewed relevance in today’s India. Debates around social equity, affirmative action, and human rights continue to dominate public discourse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and opposition leaders marked the occasion today. They paid floral tributes at Ambedkar’s memorial in Delhi. They emphasized the need to uphold his vision of a just society.

Across the country, educational institutions, civil society groups, and Ambedkarite organizations held events. They aimed to reflect on his teachings. They also sought to continue the dialogue on caste discrimination, social justice, and constitutional rights.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar remains not just a symbol of resistance against oppression. He is also a beacon of hope for millions striving for a more inclusive India. His life is a reminder that true democracy cannot exist without equality—social, political, and economic.

As India remembers him today, the words engraved at his memorial resonate more than ever. “My final word of advice to you is educate, agitate and organize. Have faith in yourself.”
