The ICC is reportedly planning significant changes to the World Test Championship (WTC) points system. These changes will be implemented in its upcoming fourth edition, beginning in June 2025. The proposed revamp includes the introduction of bonus points for comprehensive victories. There will also be additional weightage for away wins.

Inspiration from Domestic Cricket Models

The revised structure is expected to mirror point systems seen in domestic tournaments. Such tournaments include the Ranji Trophy and Sheffield Shield. These systems incentivize teams for aggressive play. Teams are rewarded for dominant performances. This change aims to encourage attacking cricket while rewarding teams that deliver convincing results.

Addressing Inequalities in the Current Format

The current WTC system has been criticized for its imbalance additionally it is also seen as complex. This criticism arises because not all participating teams play each other during the cycle. The new model aims to correct this by placing higher value on overseas victories and performances against stronger opponents.

Nations like India, Australia, and England currently play nearly double the number of matches compared to other teams. Additionally, there’s discussion around introducing seedings, where wins against top-ranked teams would yield greater points.

England’s Frustration
The current format frustrates England. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been vocal in its criticism of the current WTC system. Despite hosting the WTC final on all three occasions, England has failed to make the final. England captain Ben Stokes even described the points system as “utterly confusing.” ECB chairman Richard Thompson has advocated for changes. He wants to make the championship fairer and more competitive.

South Africa’s Controversial Path to the Final
South Africa’s route to the upcoming WTC final has raised eyebrows. The team failed to secure wins against major opponents like India and New Zealand. Critics pointed out that South Africa qualified despite fielding a second-string squad in New Zealand. Nevertheless, they now have a chance to clinch their first ICC trophy. They must overcome a strong Australian side in the final this June at Lord’s.
