IPL 2025

IPL 2025 Resumes May 17, Which overseas players to stay and which to leave

New Delhi, May 16: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on May 17. This follows a one-week suspension due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The temporary halt had prompted many foreign players to return to their home countries. As the tournament gears up to restart, franchises are now facing mixed responses regarding the return of their overseas players.

South African Cricketers Face Deadline

Cricket South Africa has instructed its players to return home before May 26. This applies especially to those involved in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final. As a result, key South African players are expected to have limited participation in the IPL. These include:

  • Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee (Gujarat Titans)
  • Marco Jansen (Punjab Kings)
  • Lungi Ngidi (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
  • Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch (Mumbai Indians)
  • Tristan Stubbs (Delhi Capitals)

These players may briefly rejoin their IPL teams but are expected to depart before the mandated deadline.

Australia Leaves the Call to Players

Cricket Australia has announced it will support individual player decisions regarding participation in the remainder of the IPL season. According to reports:

  • Pat Cummins and Travis Head are expected to rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • Mitchell Starc is unlikely to return to Delhi Capitals.
  • Jake Fraser-McGurk has confirmed he will not return to the tournament.
  • Punjab Kings duo Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis are also not expected to make a comeback.

Confirmed Returns from Other Nations

Several overseas stars have confirmed their participation in the resumed season. Notable names include:

  • Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, and Karim Janat
  • Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Rovman Powell, and Anrich Nortje

However, Chennai Super Kings’ Rachin Ravindra is reportedly not returning to India.

Hyderabad Franchise Awaits Clarity

Sunrisers Hyderabad management has stated that there is no official confirmation yet on the return of key players such as:

  • Heinrich Klaasen
  • Ishan Malinga
  • Kamindu Mendis
  • Viaan Mulder

Meanwhile, Xavier Bartlett, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mitchell Owen are expected to rejoin the squad.

England Players to Exit by May 30

Several English players currently participating in IPL 2025 are scheduled to return home by May 30. They have national duties ahead of their ODI series. These include:

  • Jos Buttler
  • Jacob Bethell
  • Will Jacks
  • Liam Livingstone

As the tournament resumes, franchises will continue to adapt to these changes in player availability. They aim to maintain competitive performances in the final stretch of IPL 2025.
