India’s Role in the Iran-Israel Conflict: What You Need to Know

Amid the heightened tensions with Israel, Iran has issued statements. They are requesting support from potential allies. Iran is also sending warnings to potential threats.

A warning to US and Pakistan

After the American President Donald Trump met with Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir, the political grapevine is abuzz with speculations. There is talk about the US entering the Israel-Iran conflict through Pakistan. They might use Pakistani bases to attack Tehran. Iran has warned, without directly naming any country, that it will not tolerate any third party intervention in the situation.

When questioned about Asim’s visit to the White House, the Deputy Chief of Mission at Iran’s embassy in New Delhi was asked. His name is Javed Hosseini. He commented on the potential consequences. He stated that any third party entering the Israel-Iran conflict will face severe repercussions. Munir had met Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian Supreme Leader, in Tehran a month ago. They discussed border cooperation. They also talked about regional security. He also accused international organisations like the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). He claimed they were biased towards Israel. This bias compels Iran to act independently, even though it signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). As an indirect reply to Trump’s post regarding “Unconditional Surrender”, he added, “No unconditional surrender, that is for sure.”

The Indian angle to the story

Mr. Hosseini dismissed any disappointment with India. He added that they expect more cooperation from India. They also expect understanding from India and other like-minded nations. He said Israeli military aggression is a breach of international law. This should be condemned. New Delhi should especially condemn it since India is a leader of the Global South. He said that regardless of their relations with Iran, countries should condemn Israeli aggression for breaching global norms.

Iran has expressed full support for Operation Sindhu. This operation is dedicated to the evacuation of Indian students caught in the conflict. Around 1,000 out of the 10,000 Indians in Iran have already been safely relocated. Three Iranian-chartered Mahaan flights are also set to carry students from Mashhad to Delhi.

Expected global turmoil

Iran has not directly stated that it might shut the Strait of Hormuz. However, it is one of the options available to them. Nearly 30 percent of the world’s daily oil consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Even a brief disruption of oil supply would lead to significant economic effects in global markets.

Notably, India and Iran signed a MoU in 2015. They agreed to cooperate on the development of the Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar, Iran. The operations of this port will also be impacted by further escalation of the conflict. The implications would not be limited to Chabahar. Negative economic effects will be seen in the region. These effects will also spread to the rest of the world.
