Pakistan Responds to India’s Latest Measures Amid Rising Tensions

Following India’s recent decisions in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has issued a strong response. The National Security Committee (NSC) is led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. They convened an emergency session. Their goal was to formulate Pakistan’s official stance and outline reciprocal actions.

Indus Waters Treaty: A Red Line for Pakistan

The NSC unequivocally rejected India’s announcement to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The committee declared any attempt to alter the flow of rivers allocated to Pakistan under the treaty as unacceptable. It warned that such actions would be treated as hostile acts. Pakistan stated it would retaliate with full national strength if its water rights as a lower riparian state are violated.

Bilateral Agreements Under Review

In a significant escalation, Pakistan announced its right to suspend all bilateral agreements with India. This includes the historic Simla Agreement. This decision signals a potential shift in the diplomatic framework between the two nations.

Closure of Wagah Border and Transit Suspension

Effective immediately, Pakistan has sealed the Wagah Border, halting all movement through this key transit point. Indian citizens who entered with valid documents may exit through the same route, but no later than 30 April 2025.

SAARC Visa Exemption Cancelled for Indians

All SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) privileges for Indian nationals have been suspended, with immediate cancellation of previously issued visas. However, Sikh religious pilgrims are exempt from this directive. Non-exempt Indian visitors currently in Pakistan must depart within 48 hours.

Diplomatic Staff Expulsions and Reduction

Pakistan has taken a tit-for-tat move that mirrors India’s earlier steps. It has declared the Indian Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors posted in Islamabad as persona non grata. They have been instructed to leave the country no later than 30 April 2025. In addition, the total staff at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad will be reduced to 30 personnel.

Pakistan Closes Airspace to Indian Airlines

Pakistan has escalated its response further. It has announced the immediate closure of its airspace to all Indian-owned or operated airlines. This decision disrupts regional air connectivity.

Total Trade Suspension with India

As part of its sweeping measures, Pakistan has declared an all-encompassing suspension of trade with India. This includes not only direct bilateral commerce but also transit trade to and from third countries via Pakistani territory.
