Security forces conducted a significant counter-insurgency operation. They eliminated 16 Naxalites in an intense gunfight in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh. This took place on March 29, 2025. The operation started early in the morning. A joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carried it out.
Security personnel received intelligence inputs regarding Maoist movements in the Kerelapal region. They launched an anti-Naxal operation on March 28, 2025. As forces advanced further into the area, insurgents opened heavy gunfire on them. This led to an intense armed confrontation. The battle lasted for several hours.
Following the encounter, security forces recovered a substantial cache of weapons and explosives from the site. Among the seized arms were AK-47 rifles, SLRs, INSAS rifles, .303 rifles, rocket launchers, and BGL launchers, along with a large stockpile of ammunition and explosives. The discovery of such high-powered weaponry indicates a well-equipped and organized Naxalite force in the region.
During the operation, two DRG personnel sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care. Security teams suspect that the actual number of Naxal casualties could be higher. Blood trails were found at the scene. This suggests that some injured militants managed to flee. Search efforts are ongoing to track down any remaining insurgents.
The encounter in Sukma is part of a larger security operation. Its aim is to dismantle Maoist strongholds in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division. This region includes Sukma, Dantewada, and Bijapur. In the past two months, security forces have neutralized over 30 Maoists and captured several key figures.
The latest success in Sukma delivers a severe setback to Naxalite operations, weakening their influence in Chhattisgarh’s Red Corridor. Authorities are continuing search and combing operations in the nearby forests to track down remaining insurgent camps and prevent regrouping.
The operation reflects enhanced intelligence gathering. It shows better coordination between security forces. There is a determined push to eradicate Maoist insurgency in the region.
