Assam Rifles and Forest Department Foil Wildlife Smuggling Attempt in Mizoram, Three Arrested
Champhai, April 3, 2025 – The Assam Rifles made a significant move against wildlife trafficking. They collaborated with the Forest Department, Champhai. A joint operation was conducted near Crossing Point Four, Zokhawthar, Mizoram, on April 2, 2025. The operation resulted in the arrest of three Myanmar nationals attempting to smuggle exotic animals across the Indo-Myanmar border.
Acting on intelligence reports, the Assam Rifles set up an operation to intercept suspected traffickers. During the search, security personnel, along with forest officials, uncovered concealed containers filled with rare wildlife species. Upon further inspection, officials identified three Patagonian Maras, 24 African Spurred Tortoises, and an Albino Burmese Python. The estimated market value of the seized wildlife is approximately ₹1.31 crore.
The detained individuals, identified as Thawngsuangmunh (26), Biakzapiang (26), and Jeecy Lalnunmawia (31), are residents of Khawmawi, Myanmar. Preliminary investigations suggest that they were part of a broader network engaged in illegal wildlife trade.
After the successful operation, authorities handed over the rescued animals to the Forest Department, Champhai. They also transferred the arrested individuals for further investigation. Legal proceedings will follow. The department will work with wildlife conservation authorities to ensure the safe rehabilitation of the rescued species.
The Assam Rifles reaffirms its commitment to combating wildlife trafficking. It continues to collaborate with enforcement agencies to curb transborder crimes. These include the smuggling of endangered species. Such activities threaten biodiversity and ecological stability.
