Coast Guard, Gujarat ATS Seize ₹1,800-Crore Drug Haul in High-Stakes Sea Chase
The Indian Coast Guard collaborated with Gujarat ATS. They conducted a dramatic midnight operation in the Arabian Sea. They intercepted a major narcotics consignment. Over 300 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine were seized. It is valued at nearly ₹1,800 crore.
The bust took place between April 12 and 13, following a specific intelligence tip-off from the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad. A Coast Guard vessel was on multi-mission duty in the North Maharashtra–South Gujarat maritime zone. It was quickly diverted to act on the input. This led to the interception near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
Officials said the suspect boat was detected in pitch-dark conditions. It tried to outrun the authorities after dumping large sacks into the sea. A hot pursuit ensued, but the vessel managed to cross the IMBL, slipping beyond Indian jurisdiction.
The suspect boat escaped. However, the Coast Guard launched a smaller sea boat. They recovered the dumped consignment after an intense search. This search occurred in difficult nighttime conditions. The retrieved material is believed to be methamphetamine, a synthetic stimulant often smuggled in large volumes.
The contraband has been brought to Porbandar for forensic analysis and further investigation.
“This is yet another example of how tight coordination between agencies can deliver real results,” a senior official said. “The joint operation highlights not only preparedness but also the increasing sophistication of our maritime enforcement capabilities.”
This is the 13th successful collaboration between the Coast Guard and Gujarat ATS in recent years. Their efforts are aimed at curbing drug smuggling networks operating along India’s western coastline.
