Container Ship Sinks Off Kerala Coast: Indian Coast Guard Leads Swift Environmental Response

Kerala, 26 May 2025 – A major maritime emergency unfolded off the southwest coast of Alappuzha, Kerala. The Liberia-flagged container ship MV MSC ELSA 3 sank approximately 15 nautical miles offshore. It occurred at around 7:50 AM on Sunday, 25 May. The incident prompted the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to take swift action. The response came amid growing environmental concerns. There were fears over oil spillage and debris washing ashore.

Oil Slick Detected Hours After Sinking

Just hours after the container ship submergence, the ICG conducted aerial surveillance. This surveillance confirmed the presence of an oil slick at the site. Responding promptly, ICG Ship Saksham, already prepared for pollution response duties, was deployed for containment and cleanup operations. A Dornier aircraft was sent for aerial reconnaissance. It also dispersed Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD) to mitigate the spill’s spread.

By mid-morning, the slick was seen drifting east-southeast at approximately 1.5 to 2 knots. High sea conditions presented challenges. Waves ranged from moderate to rough. Strong winds added to the difficulties. These factors posed risks to both cleanup teams and nearby maritime traffic.

Floating Containers Create Navigation Hazards

As of 2:00 PM, the spill had from Container Ship has expanded across a 2-by-1 nautical mile area. Over 100 containers were spotted floating in the vicinity, with several already disintegrating and leaking their contents into the water. Mariners have been alerted to remain vigilant due to the increased risk of collision with drifting debris.

ICG aims to prevent further incidents. They have ensured the safe rerouting of all merchant vessels. The vessels are being directed away from the affected zone.

Multi-Pronged Response Underway

The Indian Coast Guard continues to lead an aggressive multi-agency response. Surveillance missions are ongoing, and additional OSD is being deployed via aerial sorties. Two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) are stationed on-site to provide continuous monitoring and pollution control.

The specialized pollution response vessel ICG Ship Samudra Prahari has also been dispatched. It is equipped with large quantities of OSD. Advanced containment tools are provided to support the growing response effort.

Coordination With Stakeholders and Salvage Teams

The Directorate General of Shipping convened a high-level coordination meeting on Sunday. Key entities were involved. These included the Indian Coast Guard, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), and representatives of the vessel’s owners. The ship management company, MSC, has enlisted T&T Salvage. They will undertake container recovery at the wreck site. They will also handle pollution mitigation.

The Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in Kochi has officially warned the ship’s owners. They are liable under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. This is for pollution damage caused by the incident.

Local Community Alerted Amid Shoreline Risk

Authorities have issued advisories to coastal residents. Fishermen in Kerala should remain alert for debris or cargo washing ashore. The Indian Coast Guard has asked the state government to prepare for potential shoreline cleanup operations. It has also warned communities against handling unfamiliar or potentially hazardous materials from the wreck.

Commitment to Maritime Safety and Environmental Protection

The Indian Coast Guard has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting India’s maritime environment. It ensures safety at sea. It coordinates with all relevant agencies for a timely and effective response.

Efforts are ongoing to fully assess the environmental impact. Actions are being taken to prevent escalation. Cargo recovery from the vessel is underway. Minimizing long-term damage to Kerala’s coastline is a priority.
