First All-Women Historic Sailing Expedition of Indian Armed Forces

Ten women officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force will embark on a sailing expedition. This is a first for the Indian Armed Forces. This marks a milestone achievement. They will travel onboard the Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni. The journey will start from the historic Gateway of India in Mumbai on 11 September 2025.

The yacht, named after the confluence of three services, reflects the spirit of jointness and synergy between the three Services. The team comprises five Army officers, one Naval officer and four Air Force officers. This is the first time that the Indian Armed Forces are jointly leading a circumnavigation mission. It marks a milestone in India’s maritime journey. It also serves as a shining example of Nari Shakti in uniform.

Extensive training for multifarious skills

Over the last two and a half years, the team has undergone a rigorous training regime. This included training in every domain and a training expedition to Seychelles. They were trained by experienced and well-qualified instructors from Heavy Bridging Training Camp (HBTC), Marve. They acquired multifarious skills like navigation, communication, scuba diving, basic medicals, and first aid. Additionally, they completed basic and intermediate blue-water sailing courses.

The officers will sail more than 26,000 nautical miles. They will cross the Equator twice. They will round the Three Great Capes – Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and the Cape of Good Hope. Their voyage will cover all major oceans. It will include some of the most dangerous waters on the planet. These include the Southern Ocean and the Drake Passage. The journey will test human resilience against nature’s toughest challenges. The expedition is likely to be completed over a period of nine months. The team will visit four foreign ports. They will return to Mumbai in May 2026.

Indian Army Sailing Vessel Triveni, a 50-foot yacht built indigenously in Puducherry, is an embodiment of Atmanirbhar Bharat. It is equipped with modern navigation and communication systems. It has already logged 10,000 nautical miles in training. Now it is set to take on the global challenge.

This all-women Tri-Services circumnavigation is more than a sailing expedition. It is a celebration of India’s growing maritime strength. The spirit of Nari Shakti is breaking new barriers. The vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat is charting its course on the world stage.
