HAL prepares to meet Indian Air Force delivery schedules for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A
In a landmark achievement for India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, VEM Technologies achieved a significant milestone. They handed over the first centre fuselage for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This event took place on May 30, 2025, in Hyderabad. This is the first time a major Tejas sub-assembly has been delivered by a private Indian company. It signals a stronger public-private partnership in defence production.
The handover event was attended by Secretary (Defence Production) Shri Sanjeev Kumar and HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. D.K. Sunil, underscoring the growing collaboration between the government, state-owned enterprises, and private defence manufacturers.
Shri Sanjeev Kumar commended the HAL-VEM collaboration, calling it a catalyst for accelerating Tejas Mk1A production. He noted that India’s defence sector has been witnessing annual growth of nearly 10%. There has also been a steady rise in exports. “India’s sovereignty and security depend on manufacturing critical components domestically,” he said. He emphasized the importance of a self-reliant industrial base.
The milestone coincides with the establishment of a fourth Tejas Mk1A production line. This complements the existing two in HAL Bengaluru and one in HAL Nashik. Dr. D.K. Sunil affirmed HAL’s readiness to scale up production. HAL is also prepared to meet Indian Air Force delivery schedules. More sub-assemblies are being outsourced to capable private suppliers.
He highlighted the growing network of Tier 1 and MSME vendors supporting Tejas production. He praised the swift progress of partners like VEM Technologies.
HAL’s strategic support to Indian private players has enabled them to manufacture complex sub-assemblies. These include centre fuselages, rear fuselages, wings, fins, rudders, pylons, fuel drop tanks, and air intakes. Notable collaborators include L&T, Alpha Tocol, TASL (Tata Advanced Systems), Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW), and VEM Technologies.
The LCA Tejas Division has already begun receiving critical modules in Mk1A configuration. These include air intake assemblies, loom assemblies, rear fuselages, and fin/rudder assemblies.
Aligned with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, HAL is deepening its focus on indigenisation. The company works with over 6,300 Indian vendors, including 2,448 MSMEs, fostering employment and enhancing the country’s defence supply chain.
In the past three years alone, HAL has placed orders worth ₹13,763 crore with Indian vendors. The firm is also aggressively working toward indigenising complex aircraft systems and high-value components across its various platforms.
India is asserting itself as a global aerospace and defence manufacturing hub. The Tejas Mk1A project remains a flagship initiative. VEM Technologies successfully delivered the centre fuselage. This not only boosts confidence in private sector capabilities. It also reflects the maturity and potential of India’s defence industrial base.
