Indian Army Seeks Advanced Drone Detection System to Counter Aerial Threats
The Indian Army has issued a Request for Information (RFI). This is for the procurement of an Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System (IDD&IS) (Mark II A). This system aims to strengthen the Army’s air defence capabilities. This move is in response to the increasing security challenges posed by drones. Drones are being used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and offensive operations by both state and non-state actors. The Army seeks a comprehensive system that can detect, track, and neutralize aerial threats. It is crucial in sensitive border regions like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and the Northeast.
The Directorate General of Army Air Defence (AAD) has set detailed specifications for the system. It emphasizes the need to integrate with existing air defence networks. This equipment must operate effectively in diverse terrains and weather conditions. The nature of modern warfare is evolving. Thus, the Army requires a multi-layered approach. This approach combines radars, electro-optical sensors, radio frequency (RF) detection, and jamming technologies. It is essential to counter drone-based threats. Additionally, the system must have real-time response capabilities to intercept and disable enemy UAVs before they can execute hostile actions.
This initiative aligns with India’s broader military modernization strategy to strengthen defence preparedness against emerging threats. The Army is inviting defence firms and technology providers to submit proposals detailing their solutions. It emphasizes the need for indigenous production under ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
With recent instances of drone infiltrations along the India-Pakistan and India-China borders, concerns over drone warfare have intensified. The Army is focused on acquiring an advanced counter-drone system. This highlights its preparedness to safeguard national security. It also demonstrates its commitment to protecting critical assets from evolving aerial threats. The next steps will determine the system’s procurement timeline, with the Army prioritizing swift deployment to bolster its defence capabilities.
