INS Himagiri & INS Udaygiri set for induction under Project 17A, strengthening stealth & multi-domain warfare capabilities.
The Indian Navy is set to enhance its fleet. They will induct two advanced stealth frigates—INS Himagiri and INS Udaygiri—under Project 17A. These ships are designed with cutting-edge technology and stealth features. They will significantly boost the Navy’s combat capabilities in various warfare domains. This includes anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations.
Weighing 6,600 tons, these frigates are designed for high-speed maneuverability, capable of cruising at 30 knots (56 km/h). Their advanced stealth technology reduces radar, infrared, and acoustic signatures, making them difficult to detect by enemy forces. Equipped with an integrated combat management system, they can run independently. They can also operate as part of a naval fleet. This ability ensures strategic flexibility in high-stakes missions for Indian Navy.
Advanced Capabilities & Weapon Systems
Air Defense-These frigates are armed with Barak-8 long-range surface-to-air missiles. They offer robust protection against aerial threats like enemy planes, drones, and missiles.
Anti-Ship Warfare-The powerful BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is a key asset. It enables these frigates to engage and destroy enemy ships. They can achieve precision strikes at long range.
Anti-Submarine Warfare-The inclusion of Varunastra torpedoes and anti-submarine rocket launchers ensures that they can effectively track and eliminate underwater threats.
Surveillance & Detection-These ships are equipped with sonar, multi-use digital radar, and advanced electronic warfare systems. They can detect, track, and neutralize threats before the threats pose a danger.
Additionally, these frigates have a helipad and hangar capable of housing two helicopters, enhancing their operational range and reconnaissance capabilities. With 75% indigenous components, INS Himagiri and INS Udaygiri represent a significant step. They mark progress in India’s journey toward naval self-reliance by 2047. They reinforce the country’s maritime strength in the Indian Ocean region.
