India’s $248M Deal for T-72 Tank Engine Upgrade

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has finalized a $248 million contract with Rosoboronexport (RoE) of Russia. The contract is to acquire 1,000 HP engines for T-72 tanks. These engines will be in fully built, completely knocked down, and semi-knocked down configurations.

Boosting Indigenous Manufacturing & ‘Make in India’

As part of the agreement, there will be a technology transfer (ToT) from RoE. The transfer will be to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory), Avadi, Chennai. This transfer will facilitate local integration. It will also allow licensed production of these engines. This initiative supports the ‘Make in India’ program, strengthening domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.

 Enhancing Indian Army’s Armoured Strength

Currently, T-72 tanks, a critical component of India’s armoured fleet, are equipped with 780 HP engines. The upgrade to 1,000 HP engines will significantly enhance mobility, endurance, and offensive capabilities. This upgrade ensures these tanks remain combat-ready for modern warfare.

 Strategic Importance & Operational Readiness

The procurement of advanced engines will extend the operational lifespan of India’s T-72 tanks. It will improve battlefield performance. This measure will also reinforce India’s defence posture amid evolving regional security challenges. This modernization approach focuses on cost-effective military upgrades. It ensures the Indian Army remains technologically advanced. The Indian Army stays prepared for future conflicts.
