India’s Possible Deal with Greece Instills Fear of BrahMos in Türkiye

India’s use of the BrahMos missile against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor proved its metal to the world. The missile has been a point of discussion ever since. The fear of BrahMos that existed in Pakistan has now been transferred to its supporter Türkiye as well. This is due to the conflict between Türkiye and Greece regarding their maritime border and Cyprus. Greece is openly claiming that if Turkey has S-400, we will bring India’s Brahmos missile in response. Though the two nations are a part of NATO, they have long had this bone of contention between them.

Türkiye – Pakistan Relations

Türkiye remains a loyal supporter of Pakistan, including the actions taken against India. During Operation Sindoor, Türkiye supplied drones to Pakistan. They pledged complete support during the escalation of conflict between India and Pakistan.

This is the reason Lieutenant General Rahul R Singh, the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army, made a statement. He said that India was fighting on one border but with three adversaries, including China.

The Fear of BrahMos

The reason for so much discourse over the BrahMos missile is that it is not an ordinary missile. India and Russia jointly developed it as a supersonic cruise missile. It travels three times faster than the speed of sound. Once it is targeted and launched, it is almost impossible for the target to escape.

BrahMos in Greece

Turkish military analysts were stunned by an animated video that recently surfaced. It depicted that Greece targeting Turkish warships with Brahmos missiles received from India.

In the last week of June, Indian Air Force Chief Air Marshal AP Singh visited Greece. There he met his Greek counterpart. During the same time, India presented a model of its LR-LACM. This was at the DEFEA-25 Expo in Athens, the capital of Greece.

According to a local Greek media report, both nations have signed an agreement on defence cooperation. The agreement reportedly included potential deal for India to supply its Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM) to Greece.

Greece clearly wants to buy the supersonic missiles that have a range of over 300 km. A news published in the Greece-based Geostrategica newspaper claimed that India will give Greece a 1,000-km cruise missile. The Greek press stated that Greece and India could collaborate on cruise missiles. This cooperation would give Greece the ability to strike at great distances.

According to the report, India has made an informal proposal. They aim to supply Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM) to Greece. Greek experts believe that deploying Brahmos on the Aegean Sea islands will hinder the Turkish Navy’s response time. The Turkish Navy may not respond swiftly enough. Turkey’s naval forces might not react swiftly. The Turkish Navy will not get time to respond. Apart from this, if the missile range is between 300 to 1000 kilometers, Turkey’s airbases will be vulnerable. Their radars and defense systems will also be at risk.

The two NATO members – Türkiye and Greece – have had a long-standing rivalry. It has been marked by military conflicts and territorial disputes over the Aegean Sea. They have faced airspace violations and the Cyprus issue. More recently, there has been competition over energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean. Despite being part of the same military alliance and sharing certain EU cooperation frameworks, the relationship remains fragile.
