Pakistan Test-Fires Abdali Missile Amid Escalating Tensions with India Post-Pahalgam Attack

Pakistan conducted a training launch of its short-range surface-to-surface Abdali missile on Saturday. This move is seen as a show of force amid escalating tensions with India. The launch was confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). It took place at the Sonmiani Ranges. This was part of the ongoing military drill codenamed Exercise INDUS. The Commander Army Strategic Forces Command, (Lt Gen Muhammad Shahbaz Khan), witnessed the training launch. Maj Gen Sheharyar Pervez Butt, DG PDS at Strategic Plans Division, also observed the launch.

The test comes after heightened Indo-Pak tensions. These tensions follow the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. Pakistani-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives were involved. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has since confirmed the direct involvement of Pakistan’s ISI and military establishment. This revelation has prompted widespread outrage. It has also led to intensified security posturing by India.

A Desperate Move Amid Mounting Pressure

This missile test is a reactive and desperate signal by the Pakistani Army. Military analysts suggest it is meant to assert deterrence. In contrast, India has fielded advanced platforms such as the Pralay and BrahMos missiles. Both missiles boast superior guidance systems and higher precision. They also have significantly greater speed. The Pralay is a quasi-ballistic missile. It has a range of over 500 km. It is capable of striking hardened targets with pinpoint accuracy.

Additionally, India has deployed long-range precision strike weapons along the Line of Control (LoC). It also has advanced artillery systems like the M777 Ultra-Light Howitzers and K9 Vajra self-propelled guns. This underscores its overwhelming battlefield advantage.
