Kapil Sharma’s Canadian Cafe Attacked Days After Opening; Khalistani Link Suspected

At 1:50 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, the sound of gunshots rang out at Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s cafe in Canada. There is allegedly a Khalistani link behind the attack on actor-comedian Kapil Sharma’s cafe. In the midst of these theories, the eatery – located in Surrey, British Columbia – posted a note on instagram, affirming their strong spirits.

Kap’s Cafe Responds with Hope

The note said that the incident has left them shocked but they will stand firm against the violence. It read, “We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversations. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up.”

They thanked users for sharing kind messages and memories in support of the cafe. “This cafe exists because of your belief in what we’re building together. Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community. From all of us at Kap’s Cafe, thank you and see you soon, under better skies,” the statement added.

Police begin Investigation

The cafe, celebrated for its pink-and-white interiors and artisan desserts, had recently held a soft launch. The shooting comes within just a week of the opening of the cafe. At 01:50 a.m. local time, several unidentified assailants opened fire at the venue. Around 10 bullet holes were spotted in the cafe’s window. According to Surrey police, some staff members were inside the cafe at the time of the incident. As per Spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of Surrey Police, an investigation is underway and is in “early stages.”

According to Canadian law enforcement sources, the strike appears to be the work of the Laddi gang. Harjit Singh, alias Laddi, is associated with the banned group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). He is listed as a most-wanted terrorist by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Laddi, along with associate Kulbeer Singh alias Sidhu, is accused of planning and arming attackers responsible for the April 13, 2024 assassination of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Prabhakar in Punjab’s Nangal, Rupnagar district. The duo is also under investigation for financing cross-border terror operations and recruiting shooters for targeted killings.

Laddi cited one of Kapil Sharma’s past remarks as the reason behind the firing. However, the Surrey police department has said it is too early to link the case to someone. “Connections to other incidents and potential motives are being examined. Once that’s done, we’ll have a better idea of what happened.” said Houghton.
