Government Announces Caste-Based Census

Following the announcement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a press conference on Tuesday. He expressed support and laid out critical demands for the process.

Rahul Gandhi Welcomes the Move, Seeks Clarity
Rahul Gandhi reiterated Congress’s long-standing position advocating for a caste census and removing the 50% cap on reservations. He welcomed the Centre’s announcement but pressed for a timeline:
“We need to know when the census will actually happen,” he emphasized.
He acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s earlier remark. Modi stated that India has only four classes — the poor, middle class, rich, and super-rich. He argued that understanding the caste composition within these economic groups is vital.
“This is the first step, but we must go beyond just data collection,” he added.
Rahul Gandhi’s 4 Major Demands to the Government
- Declare Timeline for Caste Census: Rahul urged the government to specify a clear schedule for conducting the caste census. He also asked for details about the methodology.
- Adopt Telangana Model: He recommended that the Centre emulate the Telangana government’s approach — which was fast, transparent, and inclusive.
- Remove 50% Reservation Cap: Reiterating his earlier stance, Gandhi called for abolishing the constitutional ceiling of 50% on reservations. This change would ensure proportionate representation based on fresh data.
- Extend Reservation to Private Sector: He demanded the application of reservation policies in private educational institutions. He also demanded their application in jobs. He argued that social justice must not be limited to public sector opportunities.
Congress Offers Support in Designing the Census
Gandhi assured full cooperation from Congress in shaping the caste census framework:
“This was our vision, and we’ve consistently pushed for it. The Centre’s decision, even after 11 years, is a step toward social justice.”
He congratulated party workers and activists who championed this cause, saying he is proud of their commitment.
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy’s Statement
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy tweeted in support. He credited Rahul Gandhi’s vision during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. This vision sparked the nationwide demand. He noted:
“Telangana was the first state to conduct such a survey since 1931. The findings showed 56.32% of the population belongs to backward communities.”
The state legislature has since proposed 42% reservation for OBCs in education, jobs, and politics based on the data.
“Telangana leads today, and the rest of India will follow tomorrow,” Reddy concluded.
