Veteran Actor-Director Manoj Kumar Passes Away at 87 After Prolonged Illness

Legendary Bollywood icon bids farewell, leaving behind a legacy of patriotic cinema

Renowned actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, affectionately called ‘Bharat Kumar’, passed away at the age of 87 on Friday. The veteran star was known for his patriotic films. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He had battled a prolonged illness.

Tributes Pour In for a Cinematic Legend

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the legendary actor. In a video message, he described Manoj Kumar as the “lion of Indian cinema.” He emphasized the profound impact of his contributions to the industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, acknowledging Kumar’s unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. His patriotic zeal and inspiring films ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to influence generations.”

A Career Dedicated to Patriotism and Cinema

Manoj Kumar was born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab. He built a distinctive identity in Hindi cinema. His films particularly celebrated nationalism and unity.

His performances in films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) were iconic. They were remarkable. These performances cemented his reputation as the face of patriotic Bollywood.

Kumar was not only an acclaimed actor but also a talented director. His films, often themed around social issues and national pride, resonated deeply with audiences across generations.

Recognitions and Legacy

Throughout his illustrious career, Manoj Kumar received several prestigious honors, including:

  • Seven Filmfare Awards across various categories
  • Padma Shri (1992), conferred by the Government of India
