Renowned actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, affectionately called ‘Bharat Kumar’, passed away at the age of 87 on Friday. The veteran star was known for his patriotic films. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He had battled a prolonged illness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, acknowledging Kumar’s unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. Manoj Kumar was born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab. He built a distinctive identity in Hindi cinema. His films particularly celebrated nationalism and unity.
His performances in films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) were iconic. They were remarkable. These performances cemented his reputation as the face of patriotic Bollywood.
