Sangam Water Was Fit for Bathing During Maha Kumbh: Latest Pollution Control Report
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has released a new report. The report confirmed that the water quality at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj was fit for bathing during Mahakumbh. The confluence’s water quality meets bathing standards. This was during the recently concluded MahaKumbh. The report was submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). It analyzed water samples collected between January 12 and February 22. This includes samples collected on auspicious bathing days.
According to the report, statistical analysis was done. It addressed the “variability of data” in water samples collected from the same locations on different dates. The CPCB monitored five locations on the Ganga and two on the Yamuna twice a week. The findings revealed key water quality parameters like pH were within permissible limits. Dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) were also within permissible limits. Fecal coliform (FC) levels were also within permissible limits.
The report noted that water quality readings fluctuated due to factors such as human activities, river currents, and sampling locations. However, the median values indicated overall suitability for mass bathing. The median FC count was recorded at 1,400 units per 100 ml. This is well within the permissible limit of 2,500 units. The DO level stood at 8.7 mg/L, surpassing the required minimum of 5 mg/L, while BOD was 2.56 mg/L, staying below the stipulated limit of 3 mg/L.
Previously, a February 17 CPCB report had highlighted high fecal coliform levels in certain areas, raising concerns over water quality. However, the latest statistical assessment provides a broader perspective, showing that overall conditions remained within acceptable limits.
The NGT is set to hear the matter on April 7. Environmental experts and legal representatives will continue discussions on long-term strategies. These strategies are for maintaining water quality in the region.
