Delhi Set to Phase Out CNG Autos Under EV Policy 2.0: Key Rules You Need to Know

In a bold step toward cleaner mobility, the Delhi government is ready to implement Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, focusing on replacing fossil-fuel-powered vehicles with electric alternatives.

No New CNG Auto Registrations After August 15, 2025

According to the draft policy, the registration of new CNG autorickshaws will be stopped starting August 15, 2025. Existing permits for CNG autos will not be renewed and will be substituted with e-auto permits. Additionally, CNG autos older than 10 years must either be scrapped or converted to electric.

Petrol, Diesel, and CNG Two-Wheelers Next

The draft also proposes a ban on all new registrations of petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers starting August 15, 2026.

Commercial Three-Wheelers Transition: For goods carriers, registration of diesel, petrol, or CNG three-wheelers will be disallowed from August 15, 2025.

Municipal & Public Transport Go Electric: All garbage collection vehicles used by MCD, NDMC, and DJB must shift to electric. This change must be completed by December 31, 2027. Similarly, public buses operated by DTC and DIMTS for intra-city travel will transition fully to electric. Interstate buses, however, may still use BS-VI compliant diesel variants.

EVs Only for New Private Car Buyers Owning 2 Vehicles: Private owners with two or more vehicles must exclusively purchase EVs. They cannot buy non-EVs. This applies to any future additions to their fleet. This rule applies after the policy is officially notified.

Final Draft Under Review The current EV Policy expired on March 31. It has been extended by 15 days. This extension allows the Cabinet to review the final draft. Some rules, especially the two-wheeler phase-out, may be adjusted during approval.
