Indian Navy Strategizes for Future Amid China’s Rising Presence in IOR: CNS Tripathi & Foreign Secretary Address Commanders’ Conference
New Delhi, April 7, 2025 — Strategic competition is intensifying in the Indo-Pacific. The second phase of the Naval Commanders’ Conference 2025 began at Nausena Bhawan, New Delhi. The top leadership of the Indian Navy gathered to chart the future course of naval operations. They focused on addressing China’s expanding influence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Delivering the keynote address, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), emphasized operational readiness. He highlighted inter-service synergy as a cornerstone of India’s maritime posture. He commended the Navy’s high-operational tempo, successful joint missions with the Army and Air Force, and its robust platform availability.
CNS Tripathi reiterated the Navy’s commitment to indigenous defence production, highlighting advancements in domestic shipbuilding and innovation. He urged commanders to embrace emerging technologies. This will help build a “Future Ready” force. The force will be capable of adapting to rapidly shifting geopolitical and maritime scenarios.
The Admiral also noted India’s expanding footprint as a “Net Security Provider” in the region. He cited recent operations like Operation Brahma and the deployment of IOS Sagar. These initiatives aim at enhancing regional stability and humanitarian outreach.
CNS Tripathi outlined seven strategic pillars for the Navy’s advancement:
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri provided a diplomatic lens to the proceedings. He addressed the commanders and offered a broader perspective on the evolving global order. He highlighted the implications of China’s assertiveness. He discussed the shifting global alliances. He urged India to recalibrate its maritime strategy. This strategy should safeguard its interests and bolster its international standing.
