Terror Strikes Pahalgam: 26 Killed in Targeted Attack on Hindu Tourists; Search Operations and National Mourning Underway

Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir | April 22, 2025 — In a horrific act of terror, 26 people lost their lives. More than 20 people were injured. This occurred after militants, who were heavily armed, opened fire. They targeted a group of Hindu tourists in Baisaran Valley, near Pahalgam, on Tuesday. The targeted attack has triggered an all-out security response, widespread public mourning, and global condemnation.

Terror in the Valley: A Planned Ambush

The attackers were suspected to be members of The Resistance Front (TRF). This is a proxy outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba. They reportedly identified Hindu tourists. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as gunmen fired indiscriminately at point-blank range, targeting families, honeymooners, and pilgrims.

An Indian Navy officer is among the victims. The victims also include an Intelligence Bureau official. There are two foreign nationals from Nepal and the UAE. The group was said to be on a spiritual tour and post-wedding holiday.

Massive Security Sweep: Drones, Helicopters, and Jungle Hunt

In response, security forces launched a multi-agency operation across Anantnag district. Drones were deployed for aerial surveillance while helicopters were used to airlift the critically injured to Srinagar’s military hospitals. Elite troops are combing the dense Pahalgam forests where the attackers are believed to be hiding.

Checkpoints have been established throughout the region, and movement in and out of the area remains tightly controlled. The Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police are working in close coordination to neutralize the threat.

National Leadership Responds: Modi and Shah Take Charge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Saudi Arabia. He cut short his trip and returned to India. He immediately convened an emergency security meeting with top officials including NSA Ajit Doval and EAM S. Jaishankar.

In a nationwide address, Modi vowed retribution: “This was a brutal and premeditated act of terror. We will respond with determination. The spirit of our nation cannot be shaken.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Srinagar on Monday night. He is overseeing the ongoing counter-terror operation. Shah is reviewing security arrangements with state authorities. Calling the attack “a heinous assault on humanity,” Shah assured the nation of “decisive and unforgiving action.”

Unity in Grief: Locals March, Taxi Drivers Offer Free Rides

The shock and grief resonated beyond political lines. In Pahalgam and surrounding towns, locals—including Kashmiri Muslims—held candlelight vigils to mourn the victims and express solidarity. Taxi and auto drivers offered free rides to stranded tourists. They also assisted relatives of victims. This was a powerful gesture of communal harmony in the face of division.

Global Condemnation: Allies Rally Behind India

World leaders condemned the attack. U.S. President Donald Trump called it a “cowardly act” and reaffirmed support for India’s fight against terror. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the strike as “barbaric,” offering counter-terror assistance. The European Union, UK, and Gulf nations also issued strong statements of support.

Mounting Pressure for Action

Details of the attack are emerging. Opposition leaders and analysts are questioning intelligence gaps. They are also concerned about border security in a region seeing a surge in militant activity. Protests have broken out across Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, demanding swift justice and enhanced security measures in Jammu & Kashmir.

A Nation in Mourning, A Government on High Alert

This attack marks one of the bloodiest in the Kashmir Valley in recent memory. As the search for the perpetrators intensifies, India finds itself both grieving and galvanized—united by sorrow, driven by justice. Authorities have pledged that the loss will not be in vain.
